Custom software vs ready-made software: which is right for your business?
Every growing business reaches the point where spreadsheets and WhatsApp groups stop being enough. The next question is usually: should we buy ready-made software, or get custom software built?
Ready-made (off-the-shelf) software is the fastest way to start. It's proven, it's usually cheaper up front, and you can often be running within days. The trade-off is fit: you adapt your process to the software, and features you need may simply not exist.
Custom software is built around exactly how your business works. It can automate the steps that are unique to you, connect to the tools you already use, and grow in the direction you choose. It takes longer and costs more at the start, but it can save far more over the years in time, errors and workarounds.
A good rule of thumb: if a ready-made product covers around 80% of what you need, start there. If your process is what makes your business different — a special pricing model, an unusual workflow, or a customer experience competitors can't copy — custom software is usually worth it.
There's also a middle path: a ready-made product that can be customised. That's how we build our own products at Kwadverse. Kwadverse ERP, Kwadverse Commerce and Kwadverse Turf work out of the box, and our team can tailor them — adding a report, a workflow or an integration — without building from scratch.
